What Are Dental Implants?

Giving you the lowdown on this innovative dental procedure.

When you lose a tooth, traditional restorative solutions can be temporary or inconsistent. It can be challenging to find a beautiful and worry-free solution. At Oak Dentistry in Arlington, TX, we perform new, innovative implant services that allow us to restore not only your smile but your confidence, in an efficient, pain-free manner.

A dental implant is a non-removable restoration that looks and feels like a real tooth. The implant has three parts.

The implant itself, which is made of titanium, is placed into the bone socket of the missing tooth and acts like the new tooth’s root. On top of the implant, an abutment will be placed, and on top of the abutment, the new tooth will be attached. The end result is a stable, fully-functional tooth that not only acts like your natural tooth but looks like it too!

There are multiple ways implants can be used to restore your smile:

  • Replace a single tooth

  • Replace multiple teeth

  • Support and stabilize dentures

Simple steps for a truly outstanding outcome.
Preparation

The process begins with an evaluation and consultation with Dr. Schmidgall. If you are a suitable candidate, Dr. Schmidgall will use your x-rays to assess where the dental implants can be placed. We take this planning process very seriously because it is essential to evaluate the condition of your teeth and jawbone to create a strategy that best suits your needs.

Dr. Schmidgall will use our CBCT machine to render 3D images and put your treatment plan into action. This machine allows us to have a more efficient look at your mouth and custom-make your implants. Once the implant has been built, we’ll assess the fit and determine the cosmetic restoration too.

Placement

The process of placing your dental implant involves a few steps. Your implant dentist starts by preparing the jawbone and inserts your custom-made implant. It can take some weeks for the implant to fuse with the bone, something that is known as “osseointegration.” Once the abutment is placed and your gums have healed, Dr. Schmidgall will make an impression of your mouth and start the process for your restoration.
